After graduating form Georgia State University, I looked at the top ranked graduate schools. The George Washington University was the highest rank graduate school that offered specific training in working with transgender voice patients. As a result, I went there to study under Professor Joan Regnell, who is a pioneer in research and therapy techniques for transgender voice patients. I learned about the many obstacles the transgender community faces. For me, it’s very exciting and rewarding to help people in transition find who they want to be and then help them to become that person.
Treatment involves multiple areas such as education of typical communication patterns of males and females, raising vocal pitch, pragmatics such as posture, voice inflection and movement, and language structure. Sessions are tailored to the individual needs of the client. Typically the treatment model begins with initial intensive individual treatment. As the client becomes more confident in their skill level the intensity or frequency of visits decrease. This can be achieved by attending group sessions or by continuing individual sessions every other week to once a month.
